Supergirl will shift from theaters to PVOD on Tuesday, July 28, turning its DC Supergirl box office performance into a home-release story after a $123.8 million worldwide total. Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, and the film is still playing in theaters even as Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment moves it to digital storefronts.
Milly Alcock and the July 28 shift
The film opened on June 26 and took in $37 million in its domestic debut, then fell 77% in its second weekend and earned $8.6 million. That kind of drop leaves little room for a late theatrical rebound, so the business now moves to PVOD for $24.99 on Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube, with a rental option set at $19.99 for 48 hours.
$123.8 million worldwide total
As of Friday, Supergirl had earned $70.8 million in North America and $53 million internationally, adding up to $123.8 million worldwide. Variety reported that the film carried a $170 million production budget and roughly $120 million in marketing, which puts the theatrical return well short of the spend behind it.
4K Ultra HD on Sept. 8
The next step is already dated: Supergirl is scheduled for 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The 4K and Blu-ray versions will include 90 minutes of bonus features, including deleted scenes and 10 production featurettes, giving the title a second sales window after the PVOD launch.
For a film that finished behind Toy Story 5 in its opening weekend, the playbook is clear now. Theatrical momentum did not carry Supergirl far enough, so the real revenue test shifts to how many viewers buy or rent it next month and how many wait for the physical release in September.
