Pete Petoniak said hail, damaging winds and heavy rain were threatening Northeast Wisconsin on Monday after a tornado was observed just after noon over the Appleton-Menasha area. Tornado warnings were issued for the Appleton-Menasha area and to the south, putting people there under a fast-moving weather threat.
"The main threats include damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain," Petoniak said. He said wind gusts could hit 70 mph, and the second round of severe weather was expected between about 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect for most of the viewing area until 3 p.m. on Monday, while some parts of the area were under a Heat Advisory until 7 p.m. That left Northeast Wisconsin with two weather concerns at once: storm hazards from the cold front and lingering heat in part of the area. The storms were described as developing along a cold front, with scattered thunderstorms that could become severe and bring damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. People in Northeast Wisconsin who were already under warning had the most immediate reason to watch for the next round, especially if the stronger cells tracked through the Appleton-Menasha area and points south. For updates, Petoniak’s forecast pointed to the period between about 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., when the second round was expected to arrive.
How much hail and wind damage had already been reported by the time that warning window opened was the question left hanging as the storms moved through.
