Eric Winter says The Rookie alternate ending season 8 was shot because the show’s future was uncertain when the cast wrapped last season. The move gave ABC a backup path for Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen in case the network had pulled the plug.
Winter told People at Comic-Con 2026, “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back.” He added, “We even shot an alternate ending to the show” that “would’ve been different.” He described that version as a “spoiler.”
ABC’s April renewal
ABC announced The Rookie for a ninth season in April, turning the backup ending into an unused contingency rather than the series’ final image. Winter later said, “Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time,” which is the kind of line a cast gives only after the renewal risk has already been removed.
In May, the season eight finale ended with Tim Bradford proposing to Lucy Chen, then the newly engaged couple was kidnapped minutes later. That ending pushed the show into a cliffhanger territory, but the alternate version suggests the writers and cast had prepared for a far harder stop if renewal had not come through.
Season nine in early 2027
Season nine is expected to premiere in early 2027, which means the audience will get the next chapter after a finale that briefly offered commitment and then immediately yanked it away. For a long-running procedural, that kind of safety-net ending is the practical sign of a business decision still hanging over the production when cameras stopped rolling.
The unanswered piece is the one Winter would not spell out: what the alternate ending actually showed. That withheld version now functions as the clearest evidence of how close The Rookie came to needing a final, cancellation-proof ending rather than a bridge into season nine.
