Jonathan Greenard’s December surgery makes his expected Training Camp return a key Eagles storyline

The Eagles did not trade for Jonathan Greenard just to wait on his health, but that is where the story has landed for now. The encouraging part is that Greenard does not sound like a player guessing at his timetable. He said he had surgery back in December, that he is working back in and that he feels pretty confident about being ready for camp.

That matters because Greenard enters his seventh NFL season with real weight on his résumé. He was only one season removed from a 2024 campaign in which he reached at least 12 sacks for a second straight year, and he is coming off a stretch in Minnesota that included injuries. The Eagles acquired him in April, and he practiced during OTAs and minicamp, but he had not yet taken part in team drills. That should change next week, when he is expected to participate in team drills at Training Camp.

A recovery plan, not a mystery

Greenard’s own explanation suggests the Eagles have been managing his return with purpose. “I had surgery back in December, so I’m just working back in,” he said, adding that he feels confident because the team has “a good plan to get me back in and be ready to go for camp.” In other words, this has looked less like a setback and more like a controlled ramp-up.

That is an important distinction for a player whose value comes from more than box-score production. Greenard is listed at 6-foot-3 and 259 pounds, and his role on the edge is tied to availability, timing and how quickly he can rejoin the full load of camp work. If he is in team drills next week, the Eagles will get a better read on how he fits with a pass-rush group that also includes Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter.

Why the Eagles care about the timing

The timing is significant because the Eagles are trying to build toward another Super Bowl run, and Greenard has already been impressed with the way the group is operating. He said the team has a championship standard, with strong attention to detail and extra work even after practice. “They’re not going to settle for nothing less,” he said. “It’s infectious, so you either get with the program or you get left.”

That is the kind of statement teams love in June and July, but it also points to the real football question. Can Greenard move from individual rehab work into the kind of full-speed camp reps that sharpen an edge rush before the season starts? The answer will matter because the Eagles are not just adding a name; they are trying to maximize a veteran who has already shown he can produce at a high level.

There is also a broader defensive implication. Greenard spoke highly of Jalyx Hunt, calling him a freak athlete and praising his natural bend and pass-rush feel. He said Hunt is “as advertised,” and noted that he has watched him closely since his time with the Minnesota Vikings. That kind of internal endorsement does not replace production, but it does hint at a room where Greenard expects talent to be developed, not simply inserted.

For now, the key detail is the simplest one: Greenard expects to be back in team drills next week. After a December surgery, that is a meaningful checkpoint. For the Eagles, it is also a sign that one of their edge-rush pieces is moving from recovery mode toward something much more useful — live football.
