Hollie Doyle, speaking as a Sky Sports Racing ambassador, said it is difficult to make a cast-iron case against Bow Echo as he steps up against older horses for the first time. The colt has already won the Guineas and the St James' Palace Stakes, and he now faces a different test in Group One company at Goodwood.
Why Bow Echo stands out
The key issue is not whether Bow Echo has form, but whether he can transfer it against proven older runners. He won the St James' Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month after taking the Guineas, which means he arrives with an unbeaten record and a strong profile for the mile division. This is also the first time he has been asked to race older horses, so Wednesday is a meaningful step forward in his campaign.
Doyle sees Opera Ballo as the most obvious danger. Godolphin's runner already has a Group One win in Dubai on his record, and he also beat Field Of Gold and Zeus Olympios at Sandown. Doyle said he ran a game race in the Queen Anne and could be hard to peg back on a track that suits front-runners like him.
Other Goodwood notes
Doyle also highlighted Rebecca Menzies' unbeaten Adonius as a horse she would love to see land a big race. Adonius has been kept fresh since extending his unbeaten record in the Lily Agnes at Chester, and Doyle said he has speed to burn.
Elsewhere in the week, Flora Of Bermuda arrives in form after winning the Group Three Summer Stakes at York this month. Pershaada won a novice race in May, while Zanthos won the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket last year, giving the card a strong mix of recent winners and established names.
For Wednesday's Sussex Stakes, though, the main question remains simple: can Bow Echo extend his unbeaten run when the pressure rises in Group One company? If he does, it would further strengthen his place in the season's top-mile form line.
