“I got a huge gift as an actor when I saw the scripts for Season 3, because it’s rare when you’re playing a part over an extended period of time that it gets to change and evolve so drastically. My character essentially has a revelation at the end of Season 2 that just propels him into a whole new way of thinking, new way of being. Physically, morally, mentally, spiritually, everything changes, which is rare as an actor to get a gift like that, and that was pure gold for me,” Tim Robbins said during San Diego Comic-Con.
That is a bigger swing than most long-running TV roles allow. Robbins is not describing a gradual adjustment for Bernard in Silo; he is describing a reset that reaches the body, the conscience, the mind, and the faith of the character. For viewers, that means the version of Bernard from the first two seasons is not the one coming back into the story.

Robbins said Bernard’s Season 2 revelation sends him into “a whole new way of thinking, new way of being,” and that is the real pivot point for the character. Bernard in Silo ends up moving from the quasi-dictator seen in the first two seasons to someone fundamentally different, which makes the return in Episode 5 more than a routine reappearance.
