Ward entered the NFL as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 draft out of Ohio State and has become one of the league's more consistent cover corners. Through eight NFL seasons, he has totaled 104 passes defensed and 18 interceptions, production that helped him earn three consecutive Pro Bowl selections since 2023.
For Cleveland, the logic is straightforward. Elite cornerback play is hard to replace, and Ward has already shown the combination of durability, ball production and recognition that teams usually pay for late in a player's prime. He is 29 years old, which makes the new extension a bet that his best seasons are not behind him yet.
The Browns had already extended Ward in April 2022, and this latest deal shows they were willing to move quickly again rather than let the contract situation linger.
