Steve Lacy turned a Spider-Man movie red carpet into a possible spoiler when he said Jean was the villain at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day world premiere. The comment came from the official livestream at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night and spread across X within the hour, putting fresh pressure on the film’s secrecy campaign.
Valkyrae’s red carpet question
“Jean. I like Jean. She's the villain, but there's a reason to her madness. I like her. I like her character.” Lacy said that after Valkyrae asked which character he was most excited to see without spoiling anything. When she pushed back and asked if he had just shared a spoiler, he added, “I like her. I like her character. I don't know why.”
Lacy was on the carpet because his song “oh yeah?” appears on the soundtrack, which explains how a non-cast guest ended up in position to say too much. That access matters in a franchise rollout built around controlled reveals, especially when Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth film in Tom Holland’s run and the 38th MCU entry.
Sadie Sink speculation returns
Fans immediately linked Jean to Jean Grey and to Sadie Sink, whose role has stayed under wraps since she was cast in March 2025 without a character name attached. She kept quiet through months of speculation, and the new clip pushed the same question back to the front of the conversation as the film’s marketing nears release.
Tom Holland had already told TikTok that Jean Grey is “not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool,” which leaves room for another Jean reference in the film. The script also has Jean DeWolff, played by Liza Colón-Zayas, and that character is a police ally in the comics rather than a villain, so Lacy’s line does not line up neatly with the most obvious X-Men read.
UK and US release window
Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in the UK on Thursday and in the US on Friday, so the spoiler chatter now lands right before audiences can test the theory themselves. Director Destin Daniel Cretton told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is better when audiences arrive not knowing certain things, and this is exactly the kind of leak that can spoil that plan.
My read: the red-carpet slip has made Jean the film’s most useful mystery, because the name could still point to Jean Grey, Jean DeWolff, or something Marvel is withholding on purpose.
