British Airways Flight BA919 reportedly stalled at around 4,000ft over Canary Wharf on July 6 while approaching Heathrow. The Airbus A320 suffered an air data systems failure, and the captain had to intervene after the first officer’s attempt to fix the problem failed.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched a probe into the serious incident. British Airways said it is assisting the AAIB and cannot comment further at this stage.

The flight came from Dusseldorf and was said to have stalled as it lined up for Heathrow. The source describing the event called it “the most serious ‘near miss’ in the UK in years,” and said, “To recover from this position is difficult, especially so low to the ground.”

That account points to a low-altitude recovery problem, not a routine cockpit warning. An air data systems failure can leave the crew without the readings they use to keep the aircraft stable on approach, which is why a failed first attempt to fix it became so serious so quickly.
