Contra Costa County prosecutors filed seven felony charges against Sofia Ann-Buitron Drotts, alleging she entered an intimate relationship with a teen boy she met while working at the John Davis Juvenile Detention Center. The 26-year-old former behavioral health clinician was charged Monday after prosecutors said the relationship began in April and continued until July 14.

Prosecutors said Drotts worked at the John Davis Juvenile Detention Center in Martinez when she was assigned the unnamed minor as a client. The charges include unlawful sexual intercourse, sending harmful subject matter to a minor and possession of child pornography.
The case adds a criminal proceeding to a county claim filed by the teenager’s family. Their filing says Drotts used her role to build a relationship with the boy while he was still in custody and continued as his therapist after his release in April.
July 14 arrest in Concord
Concord police arrested Drotts on July 14 after receiving a tip from a supervisor at the county’s Probation Department. Prosecutors said the alleged sexual relationship lasted until that day. The family’s claim says the conduct “abused her position as his therapist to establish an inappropriate emotional connection.”
The claim also says the conduct “went overlooked and unreported for months,” and that the teenager’s probation officer changed at least four times after his release. Those allegations put the focus on how a minor patient could remain under the same clinician’s care after leaving detention.

The filing against Contra Costa County says the teenager was groomed for nearly two years, beginning when he was around 15 years old. The county did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
