A police raid in Grantham took an unusual turn on 23 July when a delivery of cannabis plants arrived while officers were already on site. Lincolnshire Police, Trading Standards and Immigration Enforcement were inspecting three businesses in Grantham and one in Bourne.
Sgt Lee Mayfield said the operation was intended to “take action against a range of offences, disrupt those involved and help keep our communities safe”. Officers seized the cannabis plants, while a separate search in Bourne uncovered suspected illegal cigarettes and cannabis vapes hidden inside a large rucksack in a vehicle near a shop.
Grantham raid and delivery
The Grantham delivery matters because it happened during the search itself, not before it began. That means the plants were intercepted on site and did not reach the shop unchecked. After one of the Grantham shops was raided, immigration officers arrested two males, one from Pakistan and one from Afghanistan.
A civil penalty referral notice was also issued to a store in Grantham for illegally employing one of the males. The notice adds a separate enforcement track to the police action, linking the raid to employment checks as well as the seizures made inside the shop.
Bourne seizure and trading standards
In Bourne, officers found the suspected illegal cigarettes and cannabis vapes inside a large rucksack stored in a vehicle near a shop. One of the shop workers had a key to that vehicle. Trading Standards seized the products for further investigation.
Alex McGonigle, executive councillor for community safety at Lincolnshire County Council, said targeted businesses were “14 times more likely to sell vapes to people under the age of 18 than legitimate shops”. He also said there had been an increase in vapes containing cannabis. Police said cannabis vapes are illegal and could contain unknown ingredients, including harmful chemicals.

For customers and shop workers, the immediate result is that products, vehicles and premises linked to the raids have already been searched and seized items will now be examined further. The sharpest unresolved point is practical rather than procedural: how many cannabis plants arrived during the raid, and who arranged the delivery.
