Patricia Potter has joined EastEnders as Gemma, with the Hawkins family set to move into Walford within the coming weeks. The soap revealed five new cast members on Friday 31 July, making this the first new family added under Ben Wadey.

Potter said, “I am so delighted to be joining this iconic show as part of a new family. What a joy and a privilege to be working with such talented actors and wonderful people. I couldn’t be more excited and grateful!” The role puts her at the centre of a family unit that the show is using to push its next phase forward.
Ben Wadey called the Hawkins family “a fantastic addition to Walford.” He added that the family share “a fierce loyalty to one another,” which gives EastEnders a built-in engine for conflict rather than a simple arrivals story.
Nicola Mitchell fractures
The family is tied to Nicola Mitchell, and Wadey’s wording makes the split inside that group explicit: “decades of complicated history and Nicola's estrangement from them has left fractures within the family that are far from healed.” That sets Gemma, Ned, Ryder, Jodie and Rose up as more than a new block of characters; they arrive with old damage already in place.
Jamie Bamber will play Ned in EastEnders, Felix Uff will play Ryder in EastEnders, Anna Constable will play Jodie in EastEnders, and Marian McLoughlin will play Rose in EastEnders. Gemma is Nicola Mitchell’s sister, Ned is her husband, Ryder is Gemma and Ned’s son, and Jodie is Gemma and Nicola Mitchell’s youngest sister.
Potter, Bamber and the rest
Potter’s casting also gives EastEnders a performer with a long soap track record. She played Diane Lloyd in Holby City for five years between 2002 and 2007, played Jane Fairweather in Doctors, and voiced Ella in Henpire in 2020. Bamber said he rushed home from school in 1985 to watch the very first episode of EastEnders, while Constable said growing up with the show, she never thought a disabled actress like her could land a role like this.
