Axel Rudakubana has been charged with four offences linked to alleged incidents at HMP Belmarsh, adding a new Southport Inquiry prison case to the record already built around his July 2024 convictions. The 19-year-old is due to appear remotely at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 11 September.
Police say the offences span six months, from May 2025 to October 2025, and include assaults on prison staff and possession of a weapon. One of the charges is tied to an assault on an emergency worker on 6 May 2025, with another on 8 May 2025, a weapon charge on 26 June 2025 and a further assault charge on 28 October 2025.
HMP Belmarsh charges
The charges concern three attacks while he was in prison and possession of an offensive weapon. In May 2025, boiling water had been thrown on a prison officer at Belmarsh, and the officer was taken to hospital and discharged the same day.
That sequence matters because the new case is being built from conduct alleged to have taken place inside custody, not from the July 2024 attack for which he was already sentenced. Rudakubana was given a 52-year sentence in January 2025 after murdering Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King and Alice da Silva Aguiar and injuring eight other children and two adults in a Taylor Swift-themed dance class attack.
Broadmoor transfer
The MoJ said on 23 July that Rudakubana had been transferred from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire. That move came after the prison charges already recorded in May, June and October, so the new court case follows a transfer out of prison custody.
He was under 18 when he carried out the attack, and the judge was unable to impose a whole life order. The unanswered point now is what evidence prompted the four prison charges, which will sit alongside the sentence already imposed when he appears remotely at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 11 September.
