Samara Weaving has landed Emma Frost in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie, giving the reboot one of its most closely watched mutant roles. Jake Schreier and Kevin Feige chose her earlier this week after meeting with a number of candidates.
Emma Frost first showed up in X-Men comics in the 1980s, and January Jones last played the character in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The casting gives Marvel Studios a high-profile piece for a project that has been built in stages.

Jake Schreier was tapped to direct the new X-Men project last spring, and Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo were hired to pen the script. That puts the creative core in place before the cast is fully assembled, which is how Marvel Studios usually moves when it wants to lock tone before shooting starts.
The search sharpened quickly after July 4th, when the final list of actors tested for the role was assembled. Earlier this week, Schreier and Feige landed on Weaving, so the decision came after a short but selective run rather than a long public casting sweep.
January Jones and X-Men
Emma Frost is a telepathic mutant, and the role carries a built-in reference point because January Jones played her in two earlier X-Men films. That history makes the part more than a simple supporting cast add; it is one of the markers fans use to judge how Marvel Studios is shaping its version of X-Men.
The studio’s move also comes after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its library in 2019, which brought the X-Men universe under Marvel Studios’ control. In practical terms, that means the company is now staffing out a major Marvel IP it once had to leave elsewhere.
Samara Weaving in 2026
Samara Weaving has already logged three films in 2026, including Ready or Not 2: Here I Come in March 2026, Over Your Dead Body, and Carolina Caroline, which was named a NYT Critics' Pick in June. That run has kept her visible across different release paths, and now it places her inside Marvel Studios’ mutant lineup.
The choice sets up the next step for the reboot: Marvel Studios still has to show how Emma Frost fits into the new X-Men team on screen. For now, the clearest read is that the studio has picked a performer with range and momentum for a role that has been treated like a centerpiece rather than a footnote.
