Eddie Howe has explained why he has stepped away from Newcastle United after nearly five years in charge, saying a period of personal reflection led him to decide that now was the right time to go. Newcastle confirmed the move on Friday and are set to appoint Matthias Jaissle as his successor on Saturday.
Howe’s departure brings an end to a hugely significant spell at St James' Park. In 2025, he ended Newcastle United's 70-year wait for domestic silverware by winning the Carabao Cup, and he also guided the club into the Champions League twice.
Howe's own explanation
Howe said: "After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role as head coach of Newcastle United." He added that after nearly five years of "giving my life, heart and soul" to the club, he felt it was in the best interests of both himself and Newcastle to step away, recharge and take a break.
He also made clear how difficult the call had been, but insisted he knew in his heart it was the right one. Howe said he had always put Newcastle's interests ahead of his own and described it as the privilege of his lifetime to manage the club.
Newcastle move quickly to a successor
The timing of the change leaves little room for pause. Newcastle agreed to pay £9.5m compensation to Al Ahli for Matthias Jaissle on Friday, and the 38-year-old is expected to be unveiled as the club's new head coach on Saturday.
Jaissle is then due to meet his new players in Spain at the training camp in La Manga before his first match in charge next Saturday, when Newcastle face Valencia in a pre-season friendly at the Mestalla.
For Newcastle, this is a major reset, but it is also a statement of continuity at the top end. Howe leaves with gratitude from the club after an extraordinary contribution, and Jaissle now steps into a role shaped by expectation, momentum and recent success.
