Adrian Lam said both David Armstrong and Josh Charnley are doubtful for the clash with Wigan Warriors, with the pair carrying ankle issues and a decision expected only close to kick-off. That leaves Leigh waiting on two players who matter in different ways, and it comes at a time when the squad is already stretched by absences elsewhere.
Leigh's injury picture keeps shifting
Charnley twisted his ankle on the weekend, while Armstrong scored twice in Leigh’s win over Castleford Tigers before emerging with an ankle problem and a cork. Lam said Charnley had been in a boot up until today and described him as a strong chance of missing out, although Leigh will give him until kick-off before making a final call.
Armstrong is also in doubt, which matters because Leigh are not working from a full deck. They are already without Edwin Ipape, Aaron Pene and Frankie Halton, and Halton’s season is over after surgery on a damaged pectoral. Lam said he will be out for the rest of the season, leaving another gap in a squad that has already had to adjust repeatedly.
That is the challenge in the middle of a run like this. Leigh and Wigan have both won eight of their last nine games, which tells you the stakes are high and the margins are tight. When two teams arrive in that kind of form, one or two missing pieces can matter almost as much as the shape of the game itself.
For Leigh, the concern is not just who is unavailable, but how often the lineup is being reshuffled. Lam’s side have still found ways to stay in the race for a top-four finish, sitting fifth in Super League, but the injury list has made continuity difficult. This time it is also about whether Leigh can keep their level with a patched-up squad and whether the late call on Armstrong and Charnley leaves them with enough attacking punch to match one of the league’s form sides.
