That leaves Barcelona’s schedule in limbo at a crucial stage of their build-up to the new season.
The Tangier match had been viewed as an ideal option for Hansi Flick just one week before his first league appearance against Elche on Sunday 23 August. But with the announcement stalled, the club is now waiting to see whether the Morocco fixture can even be confirmed. If it falls through, Barcelona could be left with only one remaining friendly before the league begins.
Why the delay matters
The timing is what makes this more than a routine scheduling issue. Barcelona had already mapped out their summer around a short runway into competitive action, with the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly of Egypt set for Wednesday 19 August at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Tangier game would have added another useful test, especially with the league opener against Elche arriving just days later.
That is why the freeze matters. It is not just about a venue or a travel plan, but about preparation. Teams often want one final match to sharpen rhythms, settle selections and reduce the gap between training and competition. Barcelona were expecting that opportunity in Morocco. For now, they do not have it.

The announcement has been held up because of the migration crisis caused by the mass entry of Moroccan citizens into Ceuta. According to the Interior Ministry, 49,000 people arrived by swimming, more than half the population of Ceuta, which stands at 84,208. At least 18 people died.
