Finn Bálor believes the version of himself chasing a World Championship in 2024 is a far more complete one than the performer who first reached the top in 2016. With a SummerSlam No. 1 Contender's Match against Sami Zayn ahead, Bálor has framed this moment as the product of 10 years of growth, experience and discipline.
That matters because Bálor is not speaking about potential in the abstract. He is talking about a specific opportunity: a match at SummerSlam for the right to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship. And for Bálor, the argument is that the work has already been done over the last decade to make him ready for it.
Why Bálor feels different now
Bálor was the inaugural Universal Champion in 2016, but he said that moment arrived when he was still adjusting to the scale of the opportunity. “I think in 2016, I was very wide-eyed, bushy-tailed, excited about the future, but very inexperienced, and perhaps not as confident as I am today,” he said.
He went further, explaining that the last 10 years have changed him as both a performer and a person. Bálor said he has grown inside the ring and outside it, adding that he now has more self-belief, more discipline and the benefit of 10 years of lessons learned against top performers all over the world.
In his own words, that evolution is not just about feeling wiser. It is about being ready. “If anything, I feel better physically, I feel better mentally, I feel more focused and I feel more prepared to be World Champion,” he said.
SummerSlam offers the next test
The timing of those comments is significant. Earlier this year, Bálor challenged for the World Title on two occasions, and now he has another major chance to move himself back into the championship picture. At SummerSlam, he will meet Sami Zayn in a match that decides who earns the right to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
That is a different kind of pressure from 2016. Back then, Bálor was a fresh champion trying to establish himself at the top. Now he is a more seasoned challenger, one who has been through the highs and lows that shape whether a wrestler can be trusted in the biggest moments.
His move to SmackDown in March, shortly after The Judgment Day imploded, also gives this run a reset feeling. The path is clear, the stakes are clear, and the question is whether Bálor can turn that experience into another championship opportunity.
What comes next is simple enough. If Bálor can get past Sami Zayn at SummerSlam, he will be one step closer to proving that the most confident version of himself is also the most dangerous.
