The Impossible reunion
2012 was the first shared screen year for Watts and Holland in The Impossible, where she played Maria Bennett and he played Lucas Bennett. Holland’s feature film debut came in that project, so the new casting brings him back to an early career link rather than a fresh franchise pairing.
14 years later, the reunion arrives inside Spider-Man: Brand New Day through E.V., a role built around voice work rather than a face-to-camera appearance. That makes the casting easy to miss on first viewing, which is part of its utility for Marvel Studios: it adds an industry-facing callback without shifting the film’s lead focus away from Peter Parker.
E.V. and Peter Parker
E.V. is folded directly into Spider-Man’s new suit, where it monitors Peter’s vitals and web-shooter systems, analyzes combat scenarios, and assists with navigation and tactical support. That setup puts Watts in a line that already includes Jennifer Connelly as Karen in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dawn Michelle King as E.D.I.T.H. in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The pattern matters because these assistants are not just decoration. Each one gives Peter a different layer of operational support, and E.V. continues that system while adding a reunion angle that only becomes visible once the credits are read.
From Civil War to Brand New Day
2016 was the point when Holland began with Captain America: Civil War, after The Impossible had already paired him with Watts. Spider-Man: Brand New Day now folds that earlier connection into the current run, while also extending the franchise’s habit of using AI voices to shape Peter’s world.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also includes full-on comic cover recreations, brand-new villains, and unexpected team-ups, but the Watts casting is the cleanest casting note in the package. If viewers hear E.V. without placing the voice immediately, the reveal still lands as a deliberate piece of franchise continuity rather than a random cameo.
How much of E.V.’s performance viewers recognize as Watts on first viewing is not explained, and that is the part worth watching for when the film arrives: the voice cast is doing double duty as story function and memory hook.
