Depot floor and a blood pool
Billy was shown lying face down on the Depot floor with a pool of blood next to him before the credits. That detail is the hard reset for the storyline: it moves the mystery from suspicion to aftermath, and it gives viewers a clear crime-scene image to work from rather than a vague off-screen incident.
Jay joined Emmerdale in 2018 to play Billy, and the character has spent recent story beats caught between Dawn, Joe, and work at the Depot. Earlier scenes had Billy telling Dawn he was taking part in illegal boxing matches to earn money for his family, then moving in for a kiss when they connected again, only for Dawn to reject him.
Why Joe Tate is still in frame
Joe was already sitting near the top of the suspect list because of his history in the village. He had spiked Noah Dingle in the hope of taking his kidney, then set up a plan to have Caleb Miligan attacked when Noah was not a match. He also exposed Caleb’s shifty new business scheme at the Depot, which left him with a direct link to Billy’s injury.
Dawn’s split from Billy after her affair with Joe adds another reason viewers have treated Joe as the default answer. Billy later told Caleb what had happened between him and Dawn after worrying Joe had seen it, and Joe found out once Caleb passed it on. That chain of events leaves Joe close enough to the fallout to look guilty without making him the only plausible culprit.
Steve enters the suspect list
Reddit and X shifted the debate toward Steve after the episode aired. One Reddit thread said, “Steve? on the rob before leaving”, while another user wrote, “Steve because he was robbing the depot before he left the village”. On X, @dgtwatter added, “the usual suspects were too obvious”.
Jason Done joined the cast this month as Steve, and the character has already been linked to Kev Barton through an offer to go “on the rob” together. Steve arrived in the village this month, which gives the theory a fresh edge: he is new enough to fit a late reveal and connected enough to give the storyline a plausible second route away from Joe.
The cleaner read now is that the attack is not being built around the loudest suspect but the least expected one.
