Jazmin Sawyers underlined her readiness for the Commonwealth final in Glasgow by winning her qualifying round with a season’s best 6.80m, a result that keeps alive her bid for a maiden title and reflects a carefully managed season built around the major championships.
The 32-year-old Stoke long jumper is a veteran of the British athletics circuit, but this remains a significant moment. It is her fourth Commonwealth final, 12 years after she first made her debut in Glasgow, where she won silver.
Protecting the body, backing the plan
Sawyers has been open about the decision to pull out of several meets this season in order to prioritise the Commonwealth Games, and she says that has not always been easy. “I usually really hate pulling out of things – it feels like a cop out,” she said.
But her view has shifted with experience. “As I’ve matured and got older, 12 years on from my first Commonwealths here in Glasgow, I’ve realised it is really about protecting your body and making sure you’re ready to give your best performance at the most important times,” she said.
That approach clearly paid off in qualifying. Sawyers described the effort as her best opening three jumps of the year and said the jump left her feeling ready for the final.
A season’s best at the right time
The 6.80m mark mattered not just because it won the round, but because it came in windy conditions and in a qualifying session where composure counts as much as raw distance. Sawyers said it was “a good jump” and added that it felt especially satisfying to produce a season’s best in that setting.
There is also a wider context to her place in the Team England squad. Sawyers is one of 251 Team England athletes in Glasgow who benefit from National Lottery funding, part of a group aiming to deliver on the biggest stage.
For Sawyers, though, the focus is clear and immediate. She has already claimed silver and bronze on the European stage, won European indoor glory in 2023, and now she is chasing a first Commonwealth crown with the confidence that comes from a strong qualifying performance.
“I love the fight,” she said. “I’m going to be scrapping for that win – I don’t know exactly what it will look like but you’re going to see me go for it.”
