Austin FC will try to end a familiar frustration on Saturday when it visits the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colo. The MLS club is still looking for its first road victory of the season, and interim coach Davy Arnaud said the approach will not change just because the venue is different.
"Any game on the road is difficult," Arnaud said, adding that Austin will try to handle the trip the same way it handles any other match. "We are hoping that our first win on the road comes in Colorado."
The stakes are straightforward for both clubs. Austin FC is 6-10-1 with 19 points and sits 13th in the Western Conference, while Colorado is 4-8-5 with 17 points and is also below the playoff line. With neither team in a comfortable spot, this meeting carries added weight beyond the usual midseason urgency.
Colorado's offense has stalled
Colorado enters the match having scored once since MLS play resumed. Last Saturday, the Rapids lost 1-0 at St. Louis and failed to register a shot on goal, a sign that the attack is still searching for rhythm.
That creates a clear opening for Austin, which has been inconsistent away from home but still sees this trip as a chance to get something done. Arnaud's message suggests the plan is less about making a dramatic adjustment and more about executing better over 90 minutes.
For Austin, the front-line presence of Brandon Vazquez remains part of the equation. Vazquez said he likes getting in the box and getting good crosses, but added that Austin has not reached the end line enough and still needs to keep improving as a group.
Availability and match pressure
Colorado will also be without Rob Holding on Saturday after he was sent off against St. Louis on May 9. The 35-year-old is suspended for this match, which leaves the Rapids with another lineup issue as they try to steady themselves defensively.
Austin's Matt Wells said the game offers a chance to impose itself offensively. He pointed back to the St. Louis match, where Austin went down to 10 men, but said the defensive commitment was outstanding and needs to carry over again.
Wells also described Austin as a dynamic team, citing its sprint distance and high-intensity distance numbers. More importantly, he said the group knows that when it scores first, it is a top team in the division. That is the simple formula Austin will try to bring into Commerce City: start well, stay organized and finally turn a road performance into three points.
