Tom Holland Movies Drive Spider-Man: Brand New Day to $168M Start

Tom Holland movies have a new benchmark: Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $168M in U.S. opening day and previews on Friday. That is the biggest domestic opening ever for Sony, and it puts Destin Daniel Cretton’s film within range of the franchise numbers it is being measured against.

Tom Holland and Sony

$168M is the number that changed the weekend on Friday, with Brand New Day setting an all-time record opening day and previews total. The film is also the second-best start of Holland’s career after Avengers: Endgame, while Sony called the 3-day weekend at $325M. Some observers thought the opening was closer to $350M+, which is a wider spread than a press-release style headline would suggest.

$96M to $97.4M was the film’s pure Friday range after previews were backed out, putting it unusually close to the pure Friday of Avengers: Endgame. Endgame made $109.2M on Saturday, a +12% move from its pure Friday, so Brand New Day now has to lean on Saturday and Sunday to stay inside the strongest franchise territory.

Screen Engine/Rentrak PostTrak

88% of moviegoers gave the film a definite recommend in Screen Engine/Rentrak PostTrak exits, and it earned A CinemaScore. The audience split was 61% male and 39% female, with 18-24 the biggest demo at 36%. Those exits point to a turnout that is not being carried by one narrow age band alone.

39% of moviegoers said they went for Tom Holland, while 29% said they went for Zendaya and 41% said they came for the cast as a whole. Another 58% said the film was part of a franchise they love, and 47% said it looked fun and entertaining. For Sony, that mix matters because opening-weekend demand is arriving with audience intent already locked in.

Regal Irvine Spectrum

The Regal Irvine Spectrum led all venues with more than $385K, and PLF screens accounted for 24% of the weekend gross so far while 3D accounted for 17%. The turnout was broad enough to reach 33% same-day ticket buyers, which usually means demand is still moving through the weekend rather than being exhausted on Friday.

Deadline said the film was expected to be down between -10% to -15% from Saturday on Sunday, and also noted there was not a unison of opinion that it would beat Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1M opening record. That leaves the practical read simple: Brand New Day has already won the opening-day race for Sony, but the final weekend total will decide whether it stays in the record conversation.
