Tyler Glasnow is set to begin a rehab stint on Tuesday, a significant step for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they look to rebuild their Dodgers Starting Pitchers depth for the stretch run. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since early May with a lingering back issue, but after two live batting practice sessions, the next stage of his recovery is about to begin.
That matters because the Dodgers have already had to manage a season in which Glasnow has made only seven starts. When he has been available, he has been effective, posting a 2.72 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched. But the bigger issue has been availability, and the club now needs him to build back toward game fitness rather than simply feel good in workouts.
Glasnow's next step
According to George Bissell, Glasnow will make his first rehab start after those live batting practice sessions. The expectation is that he will need a handful of outings to raise his pitch count and stamina before he can rejoin Los Angeles' rotation, with late August the most likely return window.
For the Dodgers, that timeline is important. The MLB trade deadline is two days away in this context, and while roster moves always attract attention, getting a frontline arm back from injury can be just as valuable as any external addition.
Why this matters for the Dodgers
Glasnow's return would give the Dodgers another established starter to pair with Blake Snell, who is also coming back from the IL. That is a useful development for a club trying to stabilize its pitching group after a stretch in which injuries have shaped the conversation around the rotation.
There is still no shortcut here. Glasnow will need to prove he can handle the workload across multiple rehab outings before the Dodgers can count on him again in a major league game. But the fact that the process is now moving to game action is a positive sign.
For Los Angeles, the goal is not just to get Glasnow back. It is to get him back with enough rhythm and strength to matter in late August and beyond, when the pressure on the Dodgers Starting Pitchers group is likely to rise again.
