For now, the most important detail is not a transfer fee or a headline-grabbing rumour. It is the fact that Vinicius Junior still has not reached an agreement on a new contract with Real Madrid, and that uncertainty is enough to keep Arsenal interested.
The Brazilian forward has been in renewal talks with Real Madrid for about a year and a half, but the process has still not produced a final deal. His current agreement, signed in 2022, runs until 2027. That gives Real Madrid time, but it does not remove the tension around the numbers.
The financial gap is the real obstacle
The clearest sticking point is money. In January 2025, Jose Angel Sanchez and Juni Calafat met Vinicius Junior, two of his agents and his father at Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex to discuss the contract. Real Madrid put forward an offer worth around €20m net per season, but Vinicius Junior’s side rejected it. In the following weeks, his camp responded with a counter-offer and Real Madrid rejected that too.
That is why the talks have dragged on. The gap between the two sides is still meaningful, even though Real Madrid said in April 2025 that the renewal was very advanced. Vinicius Junior’s entourage pushed back on that assessment and said it was not close. Next week, Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior are scheduled to hold conversations again, which means the situation is still live rather than settled.
Arsenal’s interest only makes sense if that uncertainty remains. Mikel Arteta loves him, and the reported stance from Arsenal is straightforward: if he does not renew, they will be there. That does not mean a move is imminent, but it does show how quickly one of Europe’s biggest clubs can enter the picture when a contract situation stalls.
There is also a broader context here. Vinicius Junior joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018 for €45million, a fee that has long looked modest compared with the player he became. Since then, he has helped shape Real Madrid’s modern attacking identity, and his position is not in doubt. The question is whether the contract should reflect that status at a level closer to, but not quite, €30million net per season, as his side appears to be seeking.
Real Madrid still hold the advantage because the deal runs to 2027, and because they have already made clear they are not yet willing to meet the requested level. But the longer the issue remains unresolved, the more room there is for clubs like Arsenal to keep watching. A player of this calibre rarely becomes available in a simple way. The danger for Real Madrid is that a contract dispute can turn a routine renewal into a strategic problem.
