Sandfall Interactive says Clair Obscur Expedition 33 on Nintendo Switch 2 would be a big technical challenge, even though the team wants to bring it over. Tom Guillermin described the port that way in an interview with Automaton Media, and the obstacle is not creative appetite but engine support.
The reason is straightforward enough: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 relied heavily on Unreal Engine 5 features, and Sandfall Interactive says many of those features simply do not work on Switch 2 at present. That leaves the game in a different position from the modern releases already moving onto Nintendo’s hardware.
Tom Guillermin and Switch 2
Tom Guillermin said the team wants a Switch 2 version, but he called it a “big technical challenge.” That is the practical line between interest and release: Sandfall Interactive is not describing a stylistic issue or a marketing decision, but a port that would require major engineering work before it could be sold.
The game already won Game of the Year last year, so a Switch 2 release would not be a minor catalog add-on. It would extend a high-profile title to a one-year-old platform, and it would test how far a smaller studio can push a hardware target when the original build leans on features that the new system does not yet handle cleanly.
Lumen Lite and Unreal Engine
Alan Reynaud said Epic is introducing features like Lumen Lite now, which is easier to run than the standard Lumen. He added that “these things take time to roll out, so we’ll have to consider the updates coming from Unreal Engine to determine what to do.”
That point matters because the port question is tied to the engine’s roadmap, not just Sandfall Interactive’s wish list. If the features the game depends on arrive slowly, the studio has to wait, adapt, or decide that the work is too heavy for a team that would rather keep moving than spend months rebuilding systems for one platform.
Switch 2’s uneven runway
The Switch 2 can already run modern games like Resident Evil Requiem and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with minimal compromises, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch on the system at the same time as on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That makes Sandfall Interactive’s problem stand out: the hardware can handle some current releases, but not every game engine setup lands there with the same ease.
Polygon also noted that 2K Games indefinitely delayed Borderlands 4 on Switch 2, while Strauss Zelnick told Game File that “the project hadn't been cancelled.” Add in Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, first announced during the Nintendo Switch 2 full reveal Direct with a 2025 release window and now set for Aug. 28, and the pattern is clear: the console can attract major ports, but only after a hard technical fight.
For now, Sandfall Interactive has drawn the line in the right place. The studio wants Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Switch 2, but the engine work has to move first, and until Unreal Engine closes those gaps, the port remains a serious engineering project rather than a routine release.
