The surprise may have been bigger for everyone else than for Julian Brandt, but that does not make this any less significant. Ajax have pulled off a free transfer that brings in a 48-time Germany international on an immediate deal, and they have done it with enough secrecy to catch supporters and journalists off guard.
That is the point here: this is not a speculative rumour or a half-baked link designed to keep a window alive. Ajax announced on Friday evening that Brandt has signed a three-year contract running until 30 June 2029, with the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder joining as a free agent after months of talks held behind the scenes.
A serious addition, not a headline grab
There is a temptation in modern football to treat every “surprise” signing as a publicity exercise. This is not that. Brandt arrives with proper mileage on the clock: over five years at Bayer Leverkusen, seven seasons at Borussia Dortmund, and the kind of experience that does not need dressing up in marketing language. He was born in Bremen on 2 May 1996, and he has spent enough time at the top level to understand exactly what Ajax are buying.
Jordi Cruyff did not sound like a man pretending this was a gamble. He said Ajax had been talking to Brandt for several months, that the player also had other options, and that the club were delighted he chose Amsterdam. That matters because it tells you this move was pursued with intent, not stumbled into by accident.
And Cruyff’s other line cut to the heart of it: Brandt is being brought in as a top international with a wealth of experience and a strong mentality. That is the pitch, and on paper it is hard to argue with it. Ajax are not just getting a name. They are getting a player who should be able to settle quickly and raise the level of the squad immediately.
What Brandt said tells you plenty
Brandt’s own reaction was just as revealing. He said the surprise may have been bigger for others than for him, added that the past few days had been exciting, and said he was happy to be there now. That is not the language of a player wandering into uncertainty. It sounds like someone who knew the move was coming and is already prepared to get on with it.
The timing also matters. Because he is arriving as a free agent, Ajax have avoided the sort of fee that can distort a good football decision. That does not make the move risk-free, of course. But it does make it cleaner. If you can add a player of this profile without paying a transfer fee, then you have at least given yourself room to argue the deal on football grounds rather than financial panic.
In a summer where clubs so often pay through the nose for potential, Ajax have instead gone for experience, availability and immediate utility. Daniel Farke would look at that and recognise the logic straight away: in a market full of noise, sometimes the smartest move is the one that simply makes sense.
For Ajax, the real test now is whether they turn this surprise into something useful on the pitch. Brandt has the résumé, the pedigree and the timing. What he needs next is the kind of integration that turns a neat announcement into a proper footballing gain.
