Polk had been acquired by the Saints in a trade with the Patriots before he ever played for the team. But his stay in New Orleans was disrupted by injury issues, and he had recently missed the last two practices for personal reasons.
What Polk did in 2024
Polk entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2024 draft and played 15 games as a rookie for the Patriots. He finished that season with 12 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
That background mattered because it showed why New Orleans had reason to take a chance on him. He arrived with some NFL experience, but his Saints stint never got going before the retirement report changed everything.
What the Saints gave up
The trade that brought Polk to New Orleans included a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick going back to the Patriots. For the Saints, the move now stands as one that never had the chance to develop on the field.
