Barbara Palvin is the name attached to a documentary that now puts four women’s allegations against Jared Leto in one place. Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret says those women described underage experiences, turning years of rumor into a new on-screen record.

Alice McShane’s four voices

Alice McShane directed the film, and Jessica Sartenaer and her team found four women who agreed to show their faces onscreen. The women are now in their 20s, 30s and 40s, and the documentary says they described sexual assault, threatened sexual assault, sexualised grooming and statutory rape.

One woman says she received sexually explicit calls from Leto as a 16-year-old girl. She also says she later received further calls of a similar nature from a man she believes was Leto in character as somebody else.

2005 to 2018

The timeline in the film does more than stack allegations. As far back as 2005, the New York Post was running gossip columns that claimed Jared Leto was aggressively pursuing underage objects of desire at a New York hotel. By 2016, he had played Joker in Suicide Squad, and by 2018, Dylan Sprouse and James Gunn were trading jokes about Leto’s interest in teenage girls online.

Last year, Elena Clavarino spoke to nine women who variously claimed that Leto pursued them, engaged in sexually explicit telephone conversations with them, exposed himself to them and masturbated in front of them while they were underage. After that report was published, Leto’s representatives issued a denial, and the film now adds four new first-person accounts to the same pattern.

What the documentary changes

The practical effect is simple: the documentary shifts the story from scattered reporting to a single packaged allegation stream, with faces, ages and a stated chronology. That makes it harder for the conversation to stay at the level of old gossip columns or online jokes.

What happens next is the open question. The film leaves viewers with a direct test of response: what reply, if any, has Jared Leto given specifically to the allegations in Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret?
