The fight ends with Cole shot down in the Riverlands, stripping Queen Rhaenyra and the Iron Throne of one of the conflict’s most corrosive figures.
The episode puts the kill in sharp business terms for the series: one of its longest-running antagonists is removed after a run that began when he turned against Rhaenyra in Season 1. By Season 3, he had been written with more depth, but the result is the same — the board is cleared of a commander who once served as Rhaenyra’s champion and later held both the Captain of the King’s Guard and Hand of the King posts.
The Butcher’s Ball trap
Ser Criston fought in only his padded gambeson, using a flail, a sword, and a dagger as the ambush closed in. He asked, “If I strike my banners,” before pressing the only bargain available to him: would his men be spared?
Oscar Tully answered with the kind of contempt that usually decides this kind of scene before the steel does. “I’ve been decorating with the bones of my enemies and I have far too few bones,” he said, and the line made clear that surrender was never going to buy much time.
Roderick, Oscar Tully, and three arrows
Ser Criston Cole then offered to fight Ser Roderick and Oscar Tully two against one, a last attempt to recast the ambush as a duel. The reply came from the air instead: an arrow pierced his side, another entered his gut, and a third took him in the cheek.
That sequence matters because it kills the tactical fantasy Cole tried to impose on the encounter. He was not beaten in the terms he proposed; he was overwhelmed by arrows while the Starks and Riverlanders descended on his meager forces.
Gwayne at Tumbleton
Gwayne had already decided to part ways with Ser Criston Cole and traveled to Tumbleton, leaving Cole with fewer allies before the trap closed. Ormund Hightower was displeased with Gwayne’s cowardice or his smell, a small detail that lands like a final judgment on how badly the coalition around Cole was fraying.
The result is a cleaner battlefield for Queen Rhaenyra and the Iron Throne, but not a tidy one. The season has now used Episode 7, House of the Dragon season 3 to remove a figure whose loyalty had been unstable for years, and the only unresolved piece is what the series chooses to do with the vacuum he leaves behind.
