NSW Athletics announced on Thursday that Natasha Ward has died at the age of 21, bringing a heartbreaking end to the life of a runner who had already made her mark in Australian track and field.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the NSW and Australian athletics community of the passing of beloved athlete Natasha Ward,” NSW Athletics said. The organisation described Ward as a “celebrated middle-distance runner” and said she was “a greatly loved member of our community.”
Ward’s career included medals as a junior at NSW All Schools over 1500m, followed by a bronze medal at UniSport Nationals in the 1500m in 2023. In April, she added another result at national level by claiming UniSport National bronze in the 800m.
NSW Athletics said Ward’s “kindness and joy touched everyone fortunate enough to know her,” adding that her “magnetic smile and warm personality have left a permanent mark on Australian athletics.” The group also said her “enthusiasm and determination inspired her training partners.”
The death comes just weeks after the passing of Jemma Stapleton while on holiday in Thailand, another recent loss for the Australian running community. In the wake of those losses, a fundraiser had been set up to help with funeral costs and to fly family over.
The Victorian Athletic League also paid tribute, saying Ward’s “presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her.” For a community that knew her as both a competitor and a teammate, the loss is being felt well beyond the track.
