Keiran Brown, the performer and resident director, said on Facebook: "The UK tour has sadly been cancelled – just not selling unfortunately for us. If Edinburgh of all places is stuck on 19 per cent sales – you know you’re f***ed..!" The bluntness of that line tells the story more clearly than any polished launch note could: sales never reached the level needed to keep the roadshow moving.
West End to October 19
The cancellation lands while the show’s West End run continues until 5 September, so the production is still operating in one market even as the national tour has been shut down. Trainspotting The Musical was due to embark on the UK tour after its London run at Theatre Royal Haymarket, with the stop pages and tour details already removed from scheduled venues and the official website.
Three decades on stage
Irvine Welsh wrote the musical, which is directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, with music and lyrics from Welsh and Stephen McGuinness. It follows Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly three decades after the 1996 film adaptation that starred Ewan McGregor and became the highest-grossing UK film of that year. That history gave the tour a recognisable title, but recognition alone did not convert into enough advance sales.
Multiple cast members set to appear in the tour have already said on social media that they were no longer contracted for the tour window, which is the practical sign of a production winding down a plan rather than merely reshuffling dates. For ticketholders, the next step is simple: wait for the point of purchase to issue refund details, and treat any removed venue page or deleted tour listing as the signal that the road run is no longer on the calendar.
