Tony Fauci’s diary recorded Barack Obama privately insulting Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. in November 2021, while Obama was giving Fauci support as attacks on his COVID role escalated. The entry now adds a written account of how Obama spoke in a private exchange Fauci chose to preserve.

Fauci wrote that Obama described Donald Trump Jr. as “a f---ing moron” and then apologized for the crude language. Obama also called Donald Trump “a hopeless idiot” and “a pathologic liar,” according to the diary entry.

Fauci’s November 2021 entry

The diary entry places the remarks in November 2021, when Fauci was still facing public anger over his pandemic leadership. Fauci recorded that Obama had contacted him to offer support while MAGA was attacking him, and that Obama was upset that none of the moderate Republicans were speaking out on Fauci’s behalf.

Fauci also wrote down Obama’s description of the attacks as “crazy things that the far-right Republicans” were saying about him. The entry makes the private conversation part of Fauci’s record, not just a later recollection.

October 2021 pressure on Fauci

The November entry followed a month in which Fauci was bombarded with angry phone calls and threats after false claims spread about puppy experiments. His assistant stopped answering the phone for two weeks after receiving 3,600 calls in 36 hours.

Those attacks were tied to claims about NIAID funding cruel experiments on beagles in Tunisia, which were published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases and later corrected in October 2021. Donald Trump Jr. also sold T-shirts and sweatshirts on his website with the slogan “Fauci Kills Puppies.”

Rand Paul and the files

Rand Paul later released the pandemic-era journal as he sought to blame Fauci for the outbreak of the virus. The source says Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said it took about eight months and files from 11 separate servers to gather the files, and that the material was being described as government records even though it was presented as a secret diary kept by Fauci.

That leaves one immediate question on the record: how much of Fauci’s diary was released, and what other entries it contains has not been answered in the material made public. For now, the published pages give a narrow window into a private exchange at the height of the pandemic backlash, with Obama’s words preserved in Fauci’s own handwriting.
