The Pittsburgh Pirates placed Mitch Keller on the 60-day injured list Monday with a teres major muscle injury in his throwing arm, a move that effectively ends the season for the 30-year-old right-hander. For a team already sorting through pitching depth late in the year, losing its most established starter is a major blow.

Keller had been one of the Pirates’ most dependable arms for several seasons, working as a rotation anchor after making his MLB debut in 2019. He has spent most of the past few years in the role of innings-eater, and the injury removes that stability from a staff that will now need to cover a significant workload without him.

The move also comes shortly after the Pirates added bullpen help at the trade deadline, including Brandon Eisert from the Chicago White Sox on July 11. Eisert was sent down to the minors on July 29 after seven appearances, part of a stretch in which Pittsburgh has been managing its pitching staff while trying to stay competitive.

Keller’s 2026 season was built around volume, even if the results were uneven. He is 6-8 with a 5.29 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP in 22 starts, covering 115 2/3 innings with 89 strikeouts and 42 walks. That kind of workload had once again made him central to the Pirates’ plan, even as the numbers showed a season that never fully settled into rhythm.

There is also a longer-term context here. Keller signed a five-year, $77 million contract with the Pirates in February 2024, a deal that underscored how important the club viewed him after years of development. He reached the majors in 2019 after being selected in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, and he has remained part of the organization’s core for much of that span.

The injury is especially frustrating because Keller had last spent time on the injured list in 2021. The Pirates did not just lose a starter for a single turn through the rotation; they lost a pitcher who had become the longest-tenured player on the roster and a familiar presence in the middle of the staff.

What it means for Pittsburgh

For the Pirates, the immediate issue is simple: they now have a rotation hole to fill. Carmen Mlodzinski, Jared Jones, Brandon Eisert and Justin Guerriero were all part of the broader pitching picture at different points this summer, but Keller’s absence changes the shape of the staff in a way those moves alone cannot fully solve.

Pittsburgh has already been trying to steady its pitching mix while making deadline additions, and Keller’s injury pushes that challenge even further. The club will have to manage innings, shuffle roles and find a way to absorb the loss of a starter who had been expected to take the ball deep into games.

That is what makes the 60-day injured list designation so significant. It is not just a roster transaction. It is a season-ending injury to one of the Pirates’ most important pitchers, and it leaves the team with a much tougher path through the final stretch.
