López Sánchez described the sky pattern as “like living two sunsets in a few minutes”. For Avellanosa de Muñó, that means a brief stretch of darkness in a place with almost no visitors, little artificial light and a broad western horizon.
Avellanosa de Muñó and the path
The village sits around 30 minutes' drive from Burgos and just over two hours from Madrid. Residents of Avellanosa are dealing with a rare event that will pull attention to a settlement with no restaurants and no shops, plus a bar that never opens and a bodega that will never again open.
Sara Álvarez Rodríguez, who was born in Avellanosa de Muñó in 1937 and has never lived anywhere else, pointed viewers to the high ground. “Go up towards the cave,” she said. “from there you can see everything.”

The village’s present-day scale is a sharp contrast with its past. In the 1950s, Avellanosa de Muñó had roughly 200 inhabitants and several small shops, and the village survived for generations on dryland agriculture, vegetable gardens, vineyards and livestock before mechanised agriculture pushed people away.
Raúl Grande Revilla, who was born there 73 years ago and moved to Madrid as a child, described the place from memory rather than routine. That matters because the eclipse falls on a village that is no longer built for crowds, even though its western horizon makes it one of the clearest viewing points in the area.
Perseids meteor shower later
The same night will also bring the Perseids meteor shower, giving eclipse watchers a second sky event after totality ends. The practical question now is how many people will travel to Avellanosa de Muñó for the eclipse, because the narrow path and the village’s empty infrastructure point to a brief surge that the place has not had in decades.
