Randy Travis surprised Bunnia Greenwood at City of Hope Cancer Center in Chicago, meeting the longtime fan during her cancer treatment on July 31. Mary Davis rolled him into Greenwood’s room in a wheelchair, turning a hospital visit into a rare public appearance for the 67-year-old singer.

Greenwood told him, “Thank you so much. I have been a fan of yours for years,” after City of Hope Chicago said she had faced multiple cancer diagnoses and years of treatment with strength and resilience. The hospital also said she had always dreamed of meeting Travis in person, and that her mantra is “choose joy.”
Greenwood’s background gives the visit more weight than a standard celebrity stop. She worked as a dedicated NICU nurse for more than 30 years, which makes the meeting read less like a publicity beat and more like a personal debt paid back in a room where she was the patient instead of the caregiver.
How the More Life Tour
July 31 landed in the middle of Travis’s return to public appearances, and that is the friction in this story: he is appearing publicly to lift up a cancer patient while living with his own serious health history since 2013. He had a viral upper respiratory infection that year, was later diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy, and then suffered a near-fatal stroke that required surgery.
April brought the first leg of The More Life Tour in Louisville, and June added more dates. Travis has now wrapped that first portion and is scheduled to resume on Aug. 21 in Hiawassee, Georgia, before continuing through Nov. 8 in Branson, Missouri.

City of Hope Chicago shared the meeting on Instagram on July 31, pairing the clip with the line that Greenwood had lived through “multiple cancer diagnoses and years of treatment.” The hospital also wrote, “On hard days and good days alike, the music of country legend @therandytravis has kept her spirit lifted and her heart full,” then added that “Their time together was filled with warmth, connection and the kind of joy that words cannot fully capture.”
For Greenwood, the surprise gave form to a wish she had carried through years of treatment; for Travis, it showed how his return is being used in the real world, not just staged on a tour schedule. The next move is on the road, but the more durable result is simpler: a fan who spent years giving care got a moment of care back.
