For months, the biggest question around Cleveland’s new WNBA franchise has not been about roster building or even on-court style. It has been about identity. Now, that answer appears to be coming into view, and the timing suggests the reveal will matter as much as the name itself.

The Rock Entertainment Group is expected to unveil the team’s nickname on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. at Rocket Arena. That would finally give the expansion club a first official brand after fans spent months speculating about what Cleveland’s new team might be called since the franchise was awarded last year.

The clearest clue so far came in a quiet but deliberate sequence. On July 31, a mysterious sandcastle appeared at Edgewater Park in Cleveland with the words “Hear The Call” written in blue coloring. Then on Aug. 1, Gabe Wasylko posted images of the sandcastle on Instagram, and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Monsters social media accounts responded. That was enough to turn a strange public art moment into something much more likely to be a tease.

The phrase itself points toward a broader theme. It sounds like a rallying cry, but it also fits the kind of mythic branding that can shape a new team’s identity for years. The article surrounding the tease links the idea to Greek mythology and to The Odyssey, which is notable because Christopher Nolan’s epic film is in movie theaters. That kind of reference matters for a franchise still trying to define its place in Northeast Ohio sports culture.

Cleveland’s previous WNBA team, the Rockers, played seven seasons from 1997-2003, more than 20 years ago. That history gives the next name extra weight. This is not just a branding exercise; it is a chance to reconnect with a city that has not had a WNBA team in more than two decades and to do it with a name that feels durable, local and memorable.

There is also some reason for caution, because Cleveland has already shown a playful side. A few months before Aug. 1, the team sent out an April Fool’s joke with a fabricated press release about the Ohio Wolverines. So while the sandcastle and the response from team-related accounts strongly suggest a real announcement is coming, the franchise has been willing to lean into misdirection before.

Still, this feels like a genuine turning point. After months of guessing, Tuesday’s reveal should tell fans whether the Cleveland WNBA team is aiming for something traditional, mythic or entirely unexpected. In a launch phase like this, the nickname is not a small detail. It is the first sentence of the franchise’s story.
