AGT is changing how Season 21 narrows the field: Simon Cowell introduced a first-ever Judges' Callback round before the live shows begin Aug. 18. The new step gives selected acts a second pass in front of the judges instead of leaving those decisions buried in private tape sessions.
Simon Cowell’s 120-to-40 problem
Cowell said the format was a “brilliant idea” because the show has long faced one blunt arithmetic problem: “A lot of people over the years ask, 'If you give 120 people a yes, how do you make that decision to go from 120 to 40?' Normally we just watch the tapes back over and over and over and over again. No one sees it,” he said. He added, “Now I'm actually doing it [in front of the camera], and it's real. I love it.”
The four judges are Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofía Vergara, and each one hosted acts at a place of their choosing for a more intimate callback. That setup turns a behind-the-scenes narrowing process into part of the season’s on-camera action, which makes the cut line more visible before the live shows begin.
Normani and Poo Bear join
Cowell brought in six celebrity guest judges for the callback round, including Normani and Poo Bear. He said, “When I heard that Poo and Normani were going to help me, I knew I was in good hands,” and added, “Different skill sets and different experiences, but … having worked with both, they have amazing taste. I always know I can rely on both of these [people]. That's friendship. I never take this for granted.”
Poo Bear said, “I'm honored to be here,” and added, “Simon has always been my hero, just for his brutal honesty. I've always been a huge fan. And I love [having] the opportunity to be able to chime in and see if there's anything that's special brewing, any future superstars.” Normani called the session “déjà vu” and told Cowell, “You created that show, you gave me the opportunity and were willing to bet on me.”
From The X Factor USA to AGT
Normani’s presence carries its own history. She started her music career auditioning for The X Factor USA in 2012, was later invited back to perform with Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane and Camila Cabello, and those four went on to form Fifth Harmony. Sitting beside Cowell again tied the callback to a familiar talent pipeline, but this time the decision point sits inside AGT Season 21 instead of off-camera.
That shift is the real business move here: AGT is moving a crucial cut from the edit bay into the frame, where viewers can see how 120 approvals get reduced to 40 before the live shows. Which specific acts advance is not identified yet, but the new format makes the selection process part of the season rather than a hidden step between rounds.
