The Columbus Crew have agreed to transfer Max Arfsten to Middlesbrough FC for an undisclosed fee, sending one of their most productive young players to the English Championship while keeping a percentage of any future transfer.
Arfsten’s move is the latest step in a rise that began when Columbus selected him in the first round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He signed with the Crew First Team on Feb. 21, 2023, after a successful preseason campaign, then made his MLS debut on March 25, 2023 and scored nine minutes later in a 6-1 home opening victory.
From there, he became a consistent part of the squad. Arfsten made 89 MLS regular-season appearances for Columbus, including 72 starts, and finished with 14 goals and 22 assists. He also added six postseason appearances with three goals and two assists, along with five Concacaf Champions Cup matches and eight Leagues Cup matches.
A player developed and showcased by Columbus
Arfsten’s resume grew quickly in 2024, when he started all five Crew Leagues Cup matches and made three Concacaf Champions Cup appearances. On April 9, 2024, he also converted the decisive penalty kick in a 4-3 shootout win at Tigres, another moment that showed his value in high-pressure situations.
That progress carried into 2025, when he was a finalist for U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year and was selected as an MLS All-Star. In 2026, he earned All-Star recognition again and made the United States roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He debuted in the tournament on July 6 in the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
For Columbus, the transfer reflects a familiar club model: identify talent early, develop it, and create value on the way out. Crew General Manager Issa Tall said the club identified Arfsten as a player with tremendous potential in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft and praised the way he capitalized on every opportunity. Tall also said the club’s mission is to foster an environment where players and staff can develop and thrive, adding that it was rewarding to watch Arfsten grow from earning a contract in his first preseason with the club to representing the United States at the World Cup.
Arfsten’s own words made clear how much the club meant to him. He thanked the Columbus Crew, the City of Columbus and the fans, said the club gave him the opportunity he was looking for, and credited the front office, owners, coaching staff, teammates and everyone around the team for helping shape his development over the past four years. He added that he will always consider himself a member of the Crew.
The move also connects to a broader Columbus timeline. Arfsten was part of the 2023 MLS Cup-winning squad alongside Aidan Morris, and he and Sebastian Berhalter represented the United States at this summer’s World Cup. Now he heads to Middlesbrough FC with a new challenge ahead, while Columbus receives another example of how its development pipeline can lead to both on-field success and future transfer value.
