Joe Miñoso Exits Chicago Fire Season 15 After Early Episodes

Joe Miñoso is leaving Chicago Fire season 15 after appearing in a handful of early episodes to close out Joe Cruz’s storyline. The move removes one of the last original cast members still on the series and comes as the show reshapes its Firehouse 51 lineup at the start of the new season.

Miñoso’s run stretches back to Season 1, when he joined as a guest star in the pilot and then appeared in virtually every episode of the first season as a recurring character before moving up to series regular at the start of Season 2. He was one of four original cast members still on the series, which made his departure more than a routine cast change.

Season 1 to Season 15

The timing matters because Season 15 is not entering with a stable roster. Da’Vinchi is joining as a series regular and will play a new firefighter, while Miranda Rae Mayo and Taylor Kinney have signed new deals to continue on the show. Victor Teran is also taking over as showrunner after Andrea Newman exited after 14 seasons.

That combination means the early episodes have to do two jobs at once: close out Cruz’s arc and establish a different version of Firehouse 51. For a long-running series, that is usually where tone changes become visible fast, especially when one of the remaining originals is gone before the season settles into its new shape.

Joe Cruz in Season 14

The setup for Miñoso’s exit is already loaded. In the Season 14 finale, Joe Cruz and his wife announced they were having a baby, and Cruz said he would love to welcome a third boy into the family because “girls are scary.”

Then the finale pushed the character into immediate danger. Cruz’s wife was rushed to Gaffney because she worried something was wrong with the baby, and a nurse explained that the slight bleeding came from a small blood vessel getting irritated. The Cruz family is expecting twins, while the episode also ended with a storage facility fire and a roof collapse threat that sent several main characters inside the burning building.

Firehouse 51 After the cliffhanger

Stella, Pascal, and Herrmann were among the team outside calling Mayday over the radios, and viewers now have to wait for Season 15 to see who survives that chaos. Miñoso’s exit gives the early episodes a built-in handoff: resolve Cruz first, then let the rest of the season move with a newer cast mix.

For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: Miñoso will still be on screen at the start of Season 15, but not for long. The show is using those early episodes to finish one of its longest-running character arcs while the new season opens with a changed command and cast structure.
