The transfer market often moves in two steps: the agreement that gets people talking, and the squad management that decides whether it can actually happen. In RB Leipzig's case, the first part appears to be in place for Nadiem Amiri. The second part is still the hurdle.
RB Leipzig are said to have reached a basic agreement with the 29-year-old Mainz midfielder and are expected to agree a fee with 1. FSV Mainz 05 soon. The reported price range is €15 million to €20 million, which would make this a meaningful Bundesliga move for a player who has spent the past two and a half years developing at Mainz.
The appeal is not hard to see. Leipzig are said to view Amiri as a fit for a plan built around two No 8s, alongside Christoph Baumgartner and Assan Ouedraogo. That is a clear tactical idea, and it also explains why this deal has moved beyond casual interest. Amiri is not being targeted as a luxury signing; he is being linked to a specific role.
Why Leipzig want him
Amiri has already shown that he can influence big moments for Germany. In the second group game against Ivory Coast, he came off the bench and assisted Deniz Undav's equaliser. In the last-32 elimination against Paraguay, Julian Nagelsmann sent him on with 10 minutes left in extra time and Amiri scored in the penalty shootout. Those moments do not define a whole career, but they do speak to a player who can settle into pressure quickly.
That matters for Leipzig because the club is trying to shape a squad with more balance and less clutter. Sport Bild says Leipzig may need to sell players first, with Eljif Elmas the leading candidate. Arthur Vermeeren could also remain after impressing Martin Demichelis in pre-season. In other words, this is not just a question of whether Leipzig like Amiri. It is also a question of who leaves to make room.
The timing is important too. Earlier in July, Sport Bild reported Leipzig's interest in Amiri, and the current report suggests the move is now closer to becoming real. But until a transfer fee is agreed with Mainz and Leipzig reduce the squad size, the deal is still in the “close, but not done” category.
That is often where the most interesting transfer stories live. The football case is already clear. The financial and squad-building case still has to catch up. If Leipzig do complete the move, they would be adding a 29-year-old midfielder who fits a defined role in a Champions League club's plans. If not, the report will at least have shown where Leipzig believe the next upgrade should come from.
For now, the picture is simple enough: Amiri looks close to RB Leipzig, the fee appears to be in the €15 million to €20 million range, and the final step depends on sales before the window can move from agreement in principle to completed transfer.
