Mike York Says Gta 6 Delay Still Points to Trailer 3 Later This Month

The GTA 6 delay has kept the third trailer waiting, but Mike York says later this month is still the window to watch. The former Rockstar Games animator argues that the studio’s open-world pipeline still separates it from everyone else, even as honest-to-God gameplay has not yet been shown.

Mike York and GTA V

One or two or three times through GTA V was not enough to see everything Mike York says Rockstar hid in plain sight. He worked on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and he said you could play the game that many times and still not see all of the character switches.

“Here’s the thing,” York said in a conversation with Covers.com about Rockstar’s open-world development process. He added that “Rockstar makes the best open-world games, no matter what open-world it is. They’ve perfected and really honed in on the game development process of making an open world game, and a lot of companies had to play catch-up.”

Rockstar Games and Watch Dogs

One demo after another has shown how thin the gap can look from the outside. York said some developers realized they could only make a demo look like the Watch Dogs reveal and not the whole world, and he described the moment as, “holy crap, we can’t do this. We can’t make the whole world look like this; we can only make a demo look like this.”

That is the friction around GTA VI now. Rockstar is still treated as the king by one of its former animators, yet the studio has not shown the game’s gameplay in full, even though in-game footage has already been captured for marketing and the project has been made solely with current consoles in mind.

GTA VI Trailer 3

The third trailer is expected later this month, and that makes the next marketing beat the one that will answer the most basic business question around the game: whether Rockstar is moving from atmosphere to proof. Jason and Lucia have still not been shown causing mayhem as players will, so the trailer could be the first real signal of how much the campaign is ready to reveal.

“Rockstar is the king,” York said, and that line lands harder now because the studio still has not put honest-to-God gameplay in front of the audience. If later this month brings only another cut of marketing footage, the wait for a clearer look at Jason and Lucia continues; if it shows movement beyond that, the delay in the reveal starts to look like strategy, not hesitation.
