Has Naga Munchetty left Breakfast? Yes. She is leaving the programme after 17 years and will move to Radio 5 Live Breakfast from January, ending a long run on One's morning bulletin while staying with the.
Munchetty is 51 and currently presents Breakfast with Charlie Stayt from Thursdays to Saturdays. From January, she will present 5 Live Breakfast five days a week, a shift from a three-days-a-week TV role to a full weekday radio slot.
Breakfast and Radio 5 Live
Munchetty said, "It's time for a new challenge" and added that presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live was "an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up." She also said the new role would "take a huge amount of work" and require "100% of my focus and energy."
John McAndrew said Munchetty would be "hugely missed by the millions of viewers who've welcomed her into their homes each week" and added, "I'm very pleased that Naga will be staying with the and I wish her the best of luck at 5 Live." The move keeps her inside the corporation while shifting her from the television sofa to the radio studio.
Charlie Stayt and replacement
Her replacement on Breakfast has not yet been announced. The radio show will also get a new co-host to join Munchetty in the studio, after Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards said on Tuesday's show that they were leaving 5 Live Breakfast.
Burden said, "After 15 years hosting 5 Live Breakfast, I've decided it's time for a change - and I'm really excited about launching my new show on the station." Edwards said he would miss "our wonderful audience" and the team, and described Burden as "a colleague who has become a friend, and also a mentor, because she's so much older than me."
For viewers, the immediate change is simple: Munchetty will no longer be part of the Breakfast line-up after 17 years. For listeners, the bigger change comes in January, when she moves into the weekday breakfast slot and the must decide who takes her place on television.
