Tan France made his furniture debut on Thursday as Castlery launched the Castlery x Tan France Collection, the brand’s first designer collaboration. The 18-piece line gives Castlery a new branded product category while moving France’s work beyond television and fashion.

18 pieces across five markets

The collection spans living, dining, lighting, rugs, decor and accessories, and Castlery will sell it online in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and Singapore. It will also appear in four showroom cities: New York, Sydney, Brisbane and Singapore.

France said the collection took two years to come to fruition. That timeline points to more than a quick celebrity tie-in; Castlery let him design freely rather than simply swapping colors and fabrics on existing pieces.

"They agreed to let me design whatever I wanted to, as opposed to selecting new colors and fabrics [for] what they already make, which was a major plus point for me," France told WWD. He added, "I wanted my multiple backgrounds to shape this collection" and "I wanted to give it a singular point of view that could only be from me. I think the collection looks sleek and modern, but if one looks closely enough, you’ll see all of the cultural touch points within it."

France grew up in a Pakistani Muslim household in South Yorkshire, England, and said, "Living between cultures and countries has taught me that home isn’t just somewhere you live; it’s something you create, wherever you are," linking the line to the design language he says shaped his view of home. The collection’s curved forms on The Anika and Rayan mirror point to classic South Asian doorway arches, while the carved solid-oak details on Kagan and Anaya draw from South Asian design and British architecture.

Declan Ee in 2013

Castlery was founded in 2013 by a group of friends, including Declan Ee, and this launch extends the company’s catalog into a category it had not used before. For France, the move turns a personal home-design process into a retail line that now reaches customers in five markets at once.

He is still designing another home on the East Coast, which keeps his furniture work tied to an ongoing design practice rather than a one-off product release. For shoppers, the practical takeaway is simple: the line is already available online and in showrooms, and Castlery has no additional interior collections in the works.
