This is the kind of tie that says as much about where two clubs have been as where they are going. For KuPS, the route here has been familiar enough. The Finnish champions won the Veikkausliiga title in 2025 by collecting 23 points from their final 10 league fixtures, but their European campaign took a hit when they lost both home and away to Sabah Baku and slipped into Europa League qualifying. That is not an unfamiliar setting for Miika Nuutinen's side, either. This is the fifth time in the last eight seasons that KuPS have reached this stage, which underlines both their consistency and the limits of that consistency in Europe.
Universitatea Craiova arrive with a different kind of pressure. The Romanian side won the 2025-26 Romanian Superliga title to earn their Champions League entry, but that route was closed off after they eliminated ML Vitebsk, then lost 1-0 away to Levski and drew 2-2 at home. They did at least lift the Supercupa Romaniei last month after beating Universitatea Cluj on penalties, so the trip to Finland is not coming from a season of collapse. Even so, this is still a step down from where they wanted to be.
Why this first leg matters
In a tie like this, the first leg is about more than just establishing a scoreline. It is about control, rhythm and whether either side can turn a difficult summer into a platform. KuPS know the territory well enough, but they also know what it means to be knocked off course early in Europe. Universitatea Craiova, meanwhile, are back in the Europa League qualifying stage for the first time since 2000, which gives this match a historical edge as well as a competitive one.
That is what makes the opening 90 minutes interesting. KuPS have the comfort of familiarity and home advantage at the Kuopion Keskuskentta. Universitatea Craiova have the stronger European history gap to close, but they also arrive with a fresher sense of urgency after their Champions League exit. Neither club is in a position to treat this as a routine qualifier. The winner moves one step closer to the Europa League main tournament, and the loser is left with a lot less room for error.
For KuPS, this is another test of whether domestic authority can travel into Europe. For Universitatea Craiova, it is a reminder that title-winning seasons do not always lead where expected. Thursday evening should tell us which side can handle that reality better.
