Professor T is back on ITV1 on Wednesday 19 August at 9pm, and The One Show has put the return in the frame for viewers who have waited more than two years since the season three finale. Ben Miller leads the Cambridge-set crime drama as it begins season 4 with the fallout from DS Lisa Donckers being struck in a hit and run.

Stephen Brady said, “We’ve taken the stabilisers off!” and added, “Like most actors, Ben knows the character a bit better than me.” That puts Miller inside the writing process as well as on screen, with Brady describing the new run as a move toward original stories rather than a straight rerun of the Belgian series’ three-season structure.

Ben Miller shapes season 4

Brady said the narrative construction was a collaborative process between Ben Miller, himself and Walter Iuzzolino. That gives season 4 a different operating model from the earlier run: the show is still based on the Belgian series of the same name, but it has now moved beyond the source’s three seasons and is making its own choices.

The practical effect for viewers is simple. The new episodes are not just filling in time after a long gap; they are carrying the series into material the original version never covered, which is where the return stops being a copy-and-paste exercise and starts becoming a test of how far the format can stretch.

ITV1 sets the return time

ITV has fixed the UK launch date for Wednesday 19 August at 9pm on ITV1, ending the wait that began after the season three finale aired in May 2024. The fourth season had already aired in the US nearly a year earlier, so the UK broadcast is arriving after the episode run has had time to establish itself elsewhere.

For Viewers of Professor T, that gap matters less as a delay than as a reset. The return is carrying a cliffhanger into fresh territory, and the show is choosing to answer it with original plotting rather than staying boxed in by the Belgian template.

DS Lisa Donckers after the hit

Season 4 will explore the aftermath of the hit-and-run incident that left DS Lisa Donckers struck at the end of season three. That is the immediate hook for the new run, and it gives the opening stretch a concrete job: deal with the consequences before the series can move on to its new stories.

Brady has already signalled that the writers are not treating this as a narrow continuation. With season five filmed and wrapped in August 2025 and a sixth season already commissioned, Professor T is no longer behaving like a short adaptation; it is operating as a longer-form ITV series with its own runway.

The smart play for ITV is to make the return feel both familiar and more open-ended. Ben Miller is still the centre of it, but the real shift is that Professor T now has enough room to move past its source material and keep going on its own terms.
