Oreo China and KFC launch fried chicken cookie in China

Oreo China put a fried-chicken-flavored cookie on sale in China on July 31. Consumers in China can buy it now, while the limited-edition run keeps it inside that market for the moment.

The cookie is part of Oreo's limited-edition Playful Time Travel collection, and the pair are both listed on JD. Oreo China also made the launch easier to spot in packaging: red and white instead of the familiar dark blue, with fried chicken shown next to a stack of cookies.

The product keeps the same chocolate wafers as a normal Oreo. What changes is the middle, where the sweet creme is replaced with a filling meant to taste like KFC's Original Recipe, built as an 11-herb-and-spice blend with seasoning and salt.

That swap is the whole point of the collaboration. Oreo China and KFC are selling the brand contrast as the product itself: a cookie that looks like Oreo, carries KFC's logo on one wafer, and leans on savory seasoning instead of the usual sweet center.

Oreo has already used attention-grabbing limited runs before. It sold real dill pickle cookies for April Fools' Day this year, and last year it issued a Thanksgiving tin with Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, Turkey & Stuffing, Creamed Corn, Sweet Potato, and Caramel Apple Pie flavors.

Retro Popcorn joins the set

Retro Popcorn comes with the same launch, giving the collection a second flavor beyond the chicken version. It can be bought separately in an 87g box or together in a 174g bundle, which gives buyers a straightforward choice between sampling one flavor and taking both.

No official wider release has been set, so the practical answer for anyone outside China is simple: this is a China-only buy for now. Oreo China and KFC have built a limited run around a novelty flavor, and the market test will be whether the experiment stays local or expands later.
