The first goal of a season does more than change a scoreboard. It sets a tone, hands out the first little punch of momentum and reminds everyone that pre-season is over whether they liked it or not. In the Irish Premiership season opener, Cliftonville grabbed that early edge through Ben Quinn, who turned in Rhyss Campbell's low cross from close range against Crusaders.
That is exactly the sort of goal that can feel tiny in the moment and significant almost immediately. Six or seven weeks of pre-season had finally given way to a live league night, and the first of 228 Irish Premiership fixtures had barely settled before Cliftonville were in front. In a game covered live by, the early signs suggested both sides were still shaking off the rust. Inside the opening couple of minutes, both goalkeepers were already racing off their lines to clear through balls, a clear hint that nobody was quite in full control yet.
Cliftonville strike first in a game that needed a clean touch
Ben Quinn made the kind of intervention that managers love and defenders loathe. Rhyss Campbell delivered from the left, low and awkward, and Quinn did the simple thing properly by finishing from close range. It was not spectacular, but it was decisive, and in an opening fixture that matters. If the first match of a campaign is supposed to provide a snapshot of readiness, then Cliftonville looked the more alert side in the key moment that counted.
Colin Coates did not sugar-coat it from a Crusaders point of view, calling it a soft goal to give away. That is hard to argue with when the cross is allowed in and the finish is made to look comfortable. Coates pointed out that Campbell's delivery was low and difficult for defenders to deal with, but the bottom line remains the same: Crusaders were opened up in a dangerous area, and in the early stages there is no room for that sort of hesitation. As Coates put it, when the adrenaline is pumping, you cannot afford to take chances there.
There is also the wider point that season openers are rarely polished masterpieces. Coates said players feel unleashed after six or seven weeks of pre-season, which is a grind, because this is what they have been training for. That is fair enough. But even allowing for all the rust, Cliftonville still handled the first meaningful moment better. They were on the front foot, they got the ball into the right space, and Ben Quinn did the rest.
That is how campaigns begin to write themselves. One team takes the opportunity, the other gets left to explain why the door was left open. On the first night of the new Irish Premiership season, Cliftonville made the cleaner start and Crusaders were left with an awkward first lesson.
