Cat Dowling has died, ending a career that moved from Alphastates to two solo albums. Hot Press reported the loss and said its hearts go out especially to her children, while tributes inside the Irish music community began to gather around a singer who had not stepped away from the work.

Niall Stokes said, “Cat worked with Hot Press in the commercial department way back,” and added, “so we always took a close interest in her work.” He also said, “She was a wonderful singer and front-woman.”
Stokes called Alphastates “hugely original and imaginative,” and said they were “among the most compelling outfits to emerge in Ireland during the noughties.” That judgment fits the record: Made From Sand arrived in 2004, Human Nature followed in 2009, and the band split in 2010 before later returning to sporadic action.

Cat went solo after Alphastates and released The Believer in 2013, then Animals in 2021 on FIFA Records. Her songs also travelled further than the albums did: The Believer was used in Banshee and The Witches of East End, while Somebody Else was used in My Name Is Emily.

On June 21 this year, Cat wrote on her Facebook page, “I have so much new material and I really hope I can get to record it this year.” She also wrote, “Art conquers the divide,” and, “We need more coming together.”
That makes the loss sharper. She had spoken about being diagnosed with breast cancer, yet she was still talking publicly about recording new material and keeping the work moving. Stokes said, “Cat developed her style even more individually and personally as a solo artist, carving out an aesthetic and appeal that was all her own,” and added, “She will be greatly missed.”
