There is a clear logic to this move from Middlesbrough’s point of view. Delano Burgzorg never quite became a regular starter, never fully settled into consistent form and, with the squad already strengthened, his exit fits a wider recalibration of the attack.
That recalibration now looks set to send him to Preston North End in a £2m deal, with a medical due today. It is a significant sale for a player who arrived two seasons ago, made more than 70 appearances and spent the second half of last season on loan at Bristol City. For PNE, it is the sort of addition that can alter the balance of a forward group without requiring the club to build the attack from scratch.
Middlesbrough keep moving
Burgzorg’s departure is not happening in isolation. Middlesbrough have already significantly strengthened their squad, and more forward players could still arrive before the window closes. That matters because it suggests this is not simply a case of trimming down; it is a reshaping of the attacking unit around new priorities.
Kaly Sene’s arrival last summer from Lausanne is another useful marker of that shift. Sene had a bright start under Rob Edwards, but he was not part of Kim Hellberg’s plans, which tells its own story about how quickly a squad can be redefined when a club changes direction. In that context, Burgzorg moving on feels less like a surprise than the latest step in a forward line being rebuilt in real time.
Today is also due to bring Radek Vitek to Teesside to put the finishing touches to his move from Manchester United, another sign that Middlesbrough are still active and still willing to adjust the squad while the market remains open.
For PNE, the attraction is obvious: a player with top-level Championship exposure, a decent volume of appearances behind him and, perhaps most importantly, a fresh start. For Middlesbrough, the bigger picture is that this is what an ambitious window often looks like — one forward leaving, others arriving, and no guarantee the final version of the squad will look anything like the one that started it.
